Daily essentials checklist for new homeowners
The keys are in your hand and the boxes are stacked in the hall. Before the first night in your new Greater Noida West flat, here is exactly what to stock — organised, practical, and easy to tick off.
Moving into a new home is equal parts excitement and chaos. There is a moment — usually around the first evening — when you reach for something perfectly ordinary, like a dustbin bag or a box of matches, and realise you do not own a single one. This checklist exists to spare you that moment.
We have organised it the way you will actually use it: by category, then by priority. Print it, screenshot it, or simply send the lot to your nearest Noida Daily Mart on WhatsApp and let us put the box together for you. Either way, by the end of this you will know precisely what a new flat needs.
For your first night, prioritise drinking water, tea or coffee, milk, bread, basic cooking oil and salt, a few ready snacks, toilet paper, hand soap, a dustbin bag and matches or a lighter. Everything else can follow over your first week and month — and all of it is available at Noida Daily Mart with WhatsApp delivery.
One quick note before the lists: resist the urge to buy in bulk on day one. A new kitchen has no sense of your routine yet, and large packs of things you end up not using simply become clutter. Buy modest quantities of a wide range first, learn what your household actually reaches for over a fortnight, and only then commit to the big monthly packs. It is the cheapest mistake to avoid, and the easiest.
1. Kitchen staples
The kitchen is where a new home truly comes alive, and it is the category most worth getting right early. Start with the cooking foundations, then build out the dry store. The aim for week one is simple: enough to cook a proper meal, make a cup of tea, and feed a guest who drops by — not a fully stocked pantry.
Cooking foundations
- Cooking oil and a small bottle of ghee
- Salt, sugar, and a basic spice set — turmeric, red chilli, garam masala, jeera
- Atta (wheat flour) and rice
- Toor, moong or chana dal
- Tea, coffee, and your preferred milk
- Onions, potatoes, tomatoes, ginger and garlic
Dry store and ready food
- Biscuits, namkeen and a few instant options (noodles, poha, oats)
- Bread, eggs, butter and jam for quick breakfasts
- Drinking water cans or bottles until your purifier is sorted
- Pickle, ketchup and a multipurpose chutney
- Salt-and-sugar staples for guests — you will have visitors sooner than you think
2. Cleaning and household
A new flat almost always needs a clean before it feels like yours — post-construction dust has a way of appearing everywhere, settling on skirting boards and inside cupboards you have not even opened yet. Stock these before move-in day if you can, because the first proper clean is far easier done before the furniture arrives than after.
- Floor cleaner and a phenyl or disinfectant
- Dishwashing liquid or bar, plus a scrubber and sponge
- A broom, a mop, a bucket and a mug
- Dustbin bags in two sizes (kitchen and bathroom)
- Microfibre or cotton cleaning cloths and a duster
- Glass cleaner and a toilet-cleaning liquid with a brush
- Matches or a lighter, candles, and a basic torch for power cuts
- Aluminium foil, cling film and a roll of kitchen towel
3. Personal care
Easy to overlook in the rush, impossible to do without by night one. Keep a starter set within reach in a clearly marked bag.
- Toilet paper and facial tissues
- Hand soap and body soap or shower gel
- Shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrushes
- A hand sanitiser and a small first-aid kit (plasters, antiseptic, paracetamol)
- Sanitary products and any daily medication you rely on
- Shaving or grooming basics, deodorant and a comb
4. Laundry
Whether you wash by machine or by hand, the first load tends to arrive faster than expected after a move.
- Detergent powder or liquid suited to your machine
- A fabric softener and a stain-remover bar
- Cloth clips and a foldable drying stand or line
- An iron and, if you like, a small spray starch
- A laundry basket or bag to keep things off the new floor
5. Pooja and festive corner
For many families, the home is not complete until the pooja corner is set up — often the very first thing arranged in a new flat. Keep these on hand from day one.
- Agarbatti (incense) and dhoop
- A diya, cotton wicks and lamp oil or ghee
- Camphor (kapur) and a matchbox kept separately for the corner
- Roli, chawal, and a small supply of flowers or a garland
- Prasad basics — sugar, batasha or a few sweets
6. Baby and pet basics
If your household includes the smallest members — human or four-legged — add these so no one is caught short on the first night.
- For babies: diapers, wipes, baby soap and lotion, and any formula or familiar snacks
- For pets: a few days of their usual food, treats, a water bowl and waste bags or litter
7. Season-ready: monsoon and summer prep
Greater Noida West has a genuine summer and a serious monsoon, and a little preparation goes a long way. Adjust this section to the time of year you move.
For the monsoon
- An umbrella by the door and a doormat that handles wet feet
- Mosquito repellent — liquid vaporiser, coils or roll-on
- Extra dustbin bags and moisture-absorbing sachets for cupboards
- A stock of dry snacks and instant meals for days the roads flood
For the summer
- Plenty of drinking water, glucose powder and electrolyte sachets
- Cold-drink concentrates, squashes and a stock of ice trays
- Sunscreen and a light talc
- Coolant cleaning for fans and extra cleaning cloths for dust
The smarter way: first week vs first month
You do not need everything at once. Trying to buy it all on day one is exactly how people end up exhausted, over-shopped and surrounded by packs they will not finish. The calmer approach is to split the list in two — a tight set of true essentials for the first week, and a fuller restock spread across the first month as your routine settles. Here is how we would divide it.
Your first-week list (the essentials)
- Drinking water, tea or coffee, milk, bread and eggs
- Cooking oil, salt, sugar and a starter spice set
- Atta, rice and one dal
- Floor cleaner, dishwash, a broom, a mop and dustbin bags
- Toilet paper, hand soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes
- One detergent and basic laundry kit
- Matches, candles and a torch for power cuts
- Pooja basics if you wish to set up the corner immediately
Your first-month list (settling in)
- A fuller spice and condiment range, plus baking or speciality items
- Backup cleaning supplies and bathroom-specific products
- A complete personal-care and first-aid restock
- Fabric softener, iron and a proper drying stand
- Seasonal items — mosquito repellent, sunscreen or moisture sachets
- Snacks, beverages and treats for the housewarming you are bound to host
- A standing monthly order so you never run dry again
The goal is not to buy everything on day one. It is to never be caught out on day two — and that is exactly what a good neighbourhood store is for.
